Gucci Fall 1996 Runway presentation, Look 44

Model: Kristy Hume

Depicting a model from the 1990's before the swell of online presence and rush to high status modeling. This runway presentation tells a story of a failing brand, Gucci, revived by the hands of Tom Ford, an American designer who is synonymous with sex appeal and sleek styling. Ford is known for taking the brand from near bankruptcy to the billions.

A story of triumph, the assumption of power by a young artist, designer, businessman. Tom Ford, a brand--a symbol of luxury, quality, class. This show is an example of his success at Gucci. The presentation featured clothes mostly in black, followed by slinky gowns in white with cutouts and metallic rings on them, worn by tall beautiful models.

This look stood out for it’s severity and daringness of the cut and placement of the hardware. Kristy’s face and hair, along with her long slim body create a floating ghost-like effect that is haunting and beautiful.

I was especially interested in the shapes created by the exposed skin beyond the white veil of the dress. Her head and bust sit high, floating above her trouncing hands and ankles. The skin is over exposed by stage lighting, which creates a defined shadow, grounding the ghost-like figure into a walking woman.

In fashion, the silhouette refers to the outline or shape of a garment when worn. Some examples in women’s dressing are the hourglass silhouette, which emphasizes the hips, or a baby-doll silhouette because the dress is like that of a baby-doll. The silhouette can alter the shape of the body by adding or subtracting. Many common silhouettes in Men’s fashion derive from military garments because of their functionality. The silhouette can also imply aesthetic, occasion, culture, identity, status.
