-”Scoff. We work in tech. It’s no big deal.
-Did you just say scoff?
-Yes, I was scoffing. That’s how you scoff.
-No, you don’t say scoff. Scoffing is a sound of disbelief.
-No, it’s not.
Scoff.
-*scoffing *scoffing*
-Are you ok?
-That’s scoffing!”
I lol’d. I have watched this video one hundred times by now.
Tom Allen, a character actor, plays Chad Krueger--a chill California bro-dude...stock fresh of stoke. His satirical style is clever and smart.
This video had me in stitches. It poked at the ‘tech-bro’, unaware and brazen. The simplicity of the dialogue and delivery landed well and then I appreciated the cinematography. The styling of the set and California golden glow lighting made it seem intentional and perfectly executed. I then saw this character as a portrait of an American male. I wanted to capture the moment when Chad first looks aside and says, “Scoff.” So, I played the video over-and-over taking screen shots until I captured the right moment. I saved the frame I wanted to draw from in my “Study” folder on my phone.
As I studied this screenshot, I realized the combinations of colors that construct this scene. I was drawn to the background, textures and colors that signaled order and refinement. The shirt, with highlighter yellows, and soft pastels pinks and green, became a separate landscape of sculptured fabric.
His skin, with bright pinks around the eyes and hair, golden brown. It is a picture of class, a beautiful comedy. I enjoy it as a floating head, held high and saying aloud...”Scoff...”
